Trolley and Bicycle Trips Along with the growing popularity of bicycles, the introduction of trolleys in the Hartford area in the 1890s provided the traveling public with an opportunity for day trips and other pleasant outings. The trolley was introduced to South Windsor in 1895. Trips by Trolley and A-Wheel Around Hartford, published in Hartford in 1898, describes scenic excursions and includes South Windsor as one of its destinations.
A map shows the extent of the lines: Each point of interest is described on one or two pages and includes an enticing illustration: The booklet helpfully gives directions on how to get to your destination (right).
The “a-wheel” part of the title refers to bicycling, and the booklet also has routes for cyclists. You can only imagine the conditions of the roads that cyclists had to sometimes endure (left). Trips by Trolley and A-Wheel Around Hartford has been digitized and is available here.
