Free Author Event: Robert Harris Historical Moments: Military Contributions of African Americans

Join Robert Harris, as he speaks about the courage of Crispus Attucks at the Boston Massacre, the bravery of Peter Salem at Bunker Hill, the unselfish sacrifices of John R. Fox in 1944, and the heroic deed of Dorie Miller aboard the USS West Virginia during Pearl Harbor. "When we remember these acts of courage, devotion to duty, and paying the ultimate sacrifice, we realize that the African American’s military contributions goes far beyond digging ditches and serving meals aboard ships."  Co-Sponsored with Book Club on the Go.  (Snow date 02-10-22)

Join the Chat and Chew Book Club! This book club reads and discusses books with recipes or food references. Each attendee makes a dish from, or inspired by, the book to share. This book club is facilitated by Cynde Acanto of BOOK CLUB On the Go.

Let it Shine: The American Civil Rights Movement

This 45-minute professional production from North Carolina’s Bright Star Theatre, is designed to provide an honest and accessible portrayal of the American struggle for Civil Rights.

The Freedom Riders, ‘Bombingham,’ the Montgomery bus boycott, and the March on Washington are just a few of the events that will unfold as you watch key figures from the time period brought to life and celebrated.

This script is sure to provide a great launching pad for better understanding this challenging time in our nation.

This program is best appreciated by audiences from the 3rd grade to adult.

This hilarious play is guaranteed to leave audiences of all ages rolling in the aisles with delight!

 Virtual Forum: Native American Storytelling
February 24, 2022 at 7:00- 8:30pm

Fee $10 per household

 

Native Americans relied on oral history to convey morals, explanations, and other teachings. What were the roles of animals and natural elements, and what types of morals or explanations did stories provide? View several stories by northeastern Native Americans and either observe or engage in meaningful discussion.

Local History Program: The Civil War

Civil War reenactor Frank Niederwerfer, 68, of South Windsor, will speak about his great uncle, Oliver Dart, who fought with Company G, 14th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He’ll be joined by Main Street’s Bob Starr, 80, who’ll discuss his family’s book, “For My Grandchildren,” the Civil War Journey of Pierre Starr, Surgeon, 39th Ohio Infantry. Transcribed and edited by noted Civil War author Brad Quinlin, and Jason Rusk, the book details Starr’s experience as a surgeon for the Union Army during the Civil War.
