What's new in Nowashe?

We have begun the process of placing eco-friendly faux bark covering on the Sachem's House. This leg of the project is spearheaded by primitive technologist, Jim Dina.

Renowned Wampanoag artist, Kerri Helme, has begun construction of Woodland-era clay pots. Using traditional Native techniques, Kerri begins each creation with a coiled design and then completes the piece by firing it in an actual fire pit. The village will proudly feature her works in both its Sachem's House and larger wigwam.

We also have begun working with Master Gardner and author Judith Dreyer, MS, in creating a sustainable and educational Greenscape within Nowashe Village.  This Greenscape will feature a variety of Native plants, trees and herbs known for their nutritional, medicinal and functional purposes.

Nowashe naturally plays host to a wide variety of native plants, shrubs and trees.      Thriving in Nowashe are towering 80-year-old Black and Butternut (also known as White) Walnut trees. Also growing in the village are Staghorn Sumac and Mulberry trees, along with numerous Black Cherry trees. Other Native highlights are Cattails (growing in the wetlands); Arrowwood; Touch-Me-Not; Plantain; Raspberry and Blackberry shrubs; Wood Sorrel; and Goosefoots.

So far this season we've planted the Three Sisters Garden (corn, squash and beans); Native Tobacco (Nicotiana Rustica); Milkweed (left); Wild Strawberry (right); Groundnut; and Foxglove.

There will be several opportunities to visit Nowashe in September and October.  Stay tuned for calendar announcements next month!
