September brings several special offerings that are included with your admission to Nowashe Village. Life in The Village and Hunting Camp with with anthropologist and Nowashe educator, Drew Shuptar Rayvis (Pocomoke) will be highlighted on September 18th, along with former State Archaeologist Dr. Nick Bellantoni presenting his latest book, And So the Tomb Remained: Exploring Archaeology and Forensic Science within Connecticut’s Historical Family Mausolea. On September 25th, Education Director, Liz Glaviano, will explore Eastern Woodland Animals.
In addition to these entertaining programs, Nowashe Village will be open for expanded hours on September 11th for our Free Open House Day event. During this event free special programming will be held from 12-3pm in Nowashe Village. More details are available below. |

Admission to Nowashe Village always includes a multimedia self-guided tour, featured Native American artifacts, an explorer activity for children, and stationed docents ready to answer your questions. On many days, Nowashe Village also plays host to Indigenous artisans who bring various hand crafted items available for purchase. Please visit our calendar often for updates and a more detailed look at what each Saturday has to offer!

How to Make an Arrow 12-1pm Nowashe Village
|
Nowashe Village will feature a video presentation of Primitive Technologist and Nowashe educator, Jim Dina on “How to Make an Arrow” in the Sachem’s House. Follow along with Jim as he guides the audience through the essentials of arrow-making, including flint knapping, cutting, tying, gluing and fletching using only raw natural materials found in the South Windsor Meadows. Please note* This is a video presentation, as compared to a hands-on workshop.

Author Event: Kimberly McCreight 1-2 pm Wood Memorial Library
This free author event, co-hosted with Book Club On the Go, will feature New York Times bestselling author, Kimberly McCreight, in discussion with interviewer Juliet Grames, about her newest novel, Friends Like These.

Tattoo Artistry & Symbolism of the East Coast Native Nations 1-3 pm Nowashe Village

Miciah Stasis (Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribal Nation) will present “Tattoo Artistry & Symbolism of the East Coast Native Nations”. Tattoo art has long been practiced among North America’s Indigenous People. Learn about the methodology of tattooing before the modern-age, why tattoos were, and continue to be, an important cultural expression, and delve into symbols used and their significance. |

Calling All Crafters!
We are already hard at work on our 11th Annual Gingerbread House Festival: Happy Golden Days. Currently, we are expected to be open with some Covid restrictions. The application to sell is now live! We are only accepting handmade/crafted items and will be doing our best to make sure there are not too many duplicate items being sold by multiple crafters. September 24th is the deadline for submitting your application through the website.

Did you know that Nowashe Village is participating in the Museums for All Program? Through Museums for All, those receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits) can gain free or reduced admission to more than 700 museums throughout the United States simply by presenting their EBT card. | Re-Opening Hybrid Schedule for the
Wood Memorial Library Building |
We are pleased to announce that the Wood Memorial Library building will re-open to the public for book lending, research and general visitation this fall on a hybrid schedule. If you're local, we'd love to see you! A Hybrid Schedule. The Wood Memorial Library building will be open beginning Saturday, September 11th through Saturday, October 30th (closed October 9th for the Hartford Marathon). Our schedule will be Saturdays from 1pm-3pm and Thursdays from 10am-7pm.
Masks Required. In accordance with local guidelines, masks will be required for all regardless of your vaccination status.
Nowashe Village also continues to be open for its regular hours through Saturday, November 13th from 1pm-3pm (closed October 9th for the Hartford Marathon). |
We are looking for library volunteers to assist patrons with checking out books. Various shifts are available.
If you're excited for our re-opening, please consider helping our staff. At least one staff member will always be onsite with you. You can sign up online or email us to volunteer!
