February 9, 2024 Reference and Research Collection Online Catalog
I thought I would use this week's Musings from Main as an opportunity to introduce our patrons to the new online library catalog we have created in Tiny Cat. |
Please note that the materials in the Reference and Research Section do not circulate. They are available onsite at the Wood Memorial Library and Museum, 783 Main Street, South Windsor, CT by appointment or during the library's open hours, Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. |
The reference and special collections focus mainly on areas of local interest: Connecticut history and culture, Native American history and culture, and ornithology. The collection includes books, manuscripts, and archival materials, which are now searchable in our online catalog hosted by Tiny Cat.
It is easy to use and allows patrons to see what is available for research in the collection before visiting. Simply visit our website, go to the Collections tab and select Library from the drop down menu. (See the sections highlighted in green from the screen shot image below.)
Once you are on the Library page of the website, the first sentence you will see is
Search our new online catalog!
Click on that sentence and it will take you to the Friends of Wood Memorial Library and Museum's landing page in the Tiny Cat database. From there you can search away! Simply type in an author, subject, even a specific title and the online catalog will show you if it is available.
For instance, try typing "Jonathan Edwards" in the search bar. This search currently returns six results, all of which are items by, or pertaining to Jonathan Edwards, which are available for patrons to read and use for research. |
Many of the items in the collection are located on the shelves in the upper mezzanine of the Wood Memorial Library and Museum, and readily available to patrons. |
Some items however, such as this 1787 book, A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections, in Three Parts, written by Jonathan Edwards, are stored in the climate monitored archival vault and need to be retrieved by Friends' staff.
Please note that all researchers can access materials in the collections, unless they are subject to restrictions placed on them by donors or because of extreme fragility. |

Now that you have searched Tiny Cat for Jonathan Edwards, and found that we have six items relating to him, you simply have to decide what you want to read. Do you want something older? Perhaps, a primary source written by Jonathan Edwards himself... |
| where the language is a bit dense and they sometimes use f's for s's, or... |
maybe something newer, written about Jonathan Edwards, where the f's and s's are used in a more modern language placement. |

| Not really interested in the topic of Jonathan Edwards? How about another topic of local interest: Connecticut history and culture... |
or Native American history and culture... |
If you are researching a specific topic or person, please know that our dedicated volunteers are diligently working to keep this new online catalog as up to date as possible. In other words, please keep checking Tiny Cat for updates to our reference and research offerings. |
