South Windsor Historic District Commission Preservation Awards Ceremony

The South Windsor Historic District Commission is hosting an event honoring recipients of its first annual Preservation Awards. Mary Busky and John Ceppetelli of 1803 Main Street and Joseph and Neil Brockway of 19 Long Hill Road will be recognized for their outstanding commitment to historic preservation in South Windsor. The ceremony is open to the public.  Guests are encouraged to register for this free event using the form below.

Built in 1898 as a court house, the small brick building at 1803 Main Street on the Busky/Ceppetelli property was badly damaged by fallen tree branches during a storm in 2022. As a result of their dedication, research and consultation with contractors and the Historic District Commission, the couple achieved a thoughtful, accurate and beautiful restoration of the building used by Judge Ralph Grant during his term from 1898 to 1908.

The Samuel Elmore house, built in 1836, had been substantially altered by previous owners, but the Brockways decided after they purchased the house in 2021, that they wanted to return the structure to its original design with appropriate materials. The vinyl siding was replaced by appropriate wood clapboards, installed a replica of the original front door and restored the traditional wide corner boards of a Greek Revival house. Their dedicated restoration of one of the several Elmore houses on Long Hill Road has elevated it to its original stature.

“We are extremely proud to host the first annual Preservation Awards,” said South Windsor Historic District Commission Chair Beth Burgess. “This is a unique opportunity to highlight the incredible work being done by members of the community to preserve South Windsor’s historic landmarks and rich cultural history. We hope to receive a big crowd to help celebrate our inaugural winners and learn more about the town’s history through their work.”

The hour-long event will feature the award ceremony with brief remarks by award recipients, Town Historian Sandy Jeski, followed by a presentation by Jonathan Kinney, Connecticut State Historic Preservation Officer. Refreshments and light snacks will be served.

All are welcome to attend. Guests are encouraged to register for this free event using the form below.
