The building that houses the East Windsor Hill Post Office was build about 1770. At that time, David Bissell used the building as a store for dry goods and groceries. Molasses and kerosene were pumped from the cellar, rum barrels were stored in the back room. An early post office was officially established in East Windsor, now East Windsor Hill, in December, 1810, with Aaron Bissell the Postmaster. Mail has been delivered to this old post office by post rider, stage coach, train, trolley and truck. The East Windsor Hill Post Office is one of the oldest post offices in the country. However, continuous service was interrupted in 1837 when Josh Risley had the post office in his home. The office continues in operation today and bears the Zip Code 06028.
Please note that despite possible inaccuracies, we will include the description of each quilt square as published in the 1995 revised and corrected second edition booklet. This second edition was published in celebration of South Windsor’s “sesquicentennial” anniversary, 1845-1995, and was dedicated to the memory of Gail Woodard, who passed away in 1994. The revised edition was compiled by Charles E. Woodward in September, 1995, with the assitance of Doris Burgdorf who provided many historical corrections.
