32. Wapping Fair

By Mrs. Jane Wills

In 1890, the Wapping farming community held its first fair.  The fair was designed to exhibit the agricultural accomplishments and homemaking skills of this rural section of Town.  For many years the fair was held at Wapping Center; however, more recently, the school grounds and Town recreation areas have been used.  For almost eighty-five years, the Wapping Grange No. 30 has organized this community activity.  More recently the South Windsor Jaycees have assumed the sponsorship of this historic town event.

Please note that despite possible inaccuracies, we will include the description of each quilt square as published in the 1995 revised and corrected second edition booklet. This second edition was published in celebration of South Windsor’s “sesquicentennial” anniversary, 1845-1995, and was dedicated to the memory of Gail Woodard, who passed away in 1994. The revised edition was compiled by Charles E. Woodward in September, 1995, with the assitance of Doris Burgdorf who provided many historical corrections.
