The Wood Memorial Library was erected and presented to the Town of South Windsor in 1927 by William R. Wood. It was dedicated as a memorial to his father Dr. William Wood and his mother Mary Elizabeth Wood. Dr. Wood, a physician, was also a nationally known taxidermist and writer of ornithology. He prepared a collection of stuffed birds that was unequaled in this country. Much of his work was done here in South Windsor at his residence on East Windsor Hill. The library is now operated as a public library by the “Friends of Wood Memorial, Inc.” The library contains an ever-growing assortment of materials relating to local history, both in book and manuscript form. A large permanent display of local artifacts is housed in the museum on the second floor.
Please note that despite possible inaccuracies, we will include the description of each quilt square as published in the 1995 revised and corrected second edition booklet. This second edition was published in celebration of South Windsor’s “sesquicentennial” anniversary, 1845-1995, and was dedicated to the memory of Gail Woodard, who passed away in 1994. The revised edition was compiled by Charles E. Woodward in September, 1995, with the assitance of Doris Burgdorf who provided many historical corrections.
